Even though we've lived in this area for quite some time, neither of us had ever taken a trip to Mt Baker. With spring being as nice as it has been, now seemed like as good a time as any to make the trip up there. So we climbed into the Green Monster, loaded up some snacks for us and some dogfood and water for Emma and hit the road.

On our trip north we passed through the Skagit Valley just in time to see the daffodils in full bloom. They usually precede the tulips in the area by a few weeks and are always a welcome sign of spring.
On the way we stopped at what looked like an abandoned store and restaurant. Some of the equipment is still inside, but it doesn't look like it has been used in a number of years. It was still locked so we couldn't go inside, but it was fun to look in the windows to try to figure out when it was last used.
Views like this is one of the many reason we live here.
Looks like just a quick hike up the valley from here. Well, except for the snow. LOTS of snow! This is the snowiest place on earth. In 1999 it set the record for snowfall at 1140 inches of snow in one season. That is NINETY FIVE FEET of snow!
It really is beautiful up here. Spring on a ski hill is always strange. Warm enough to not really need a coat, yet there is still several feet of snow on the ground. As we left the ski lodge parking lot we picked up a hitch hiking snowboarder and gave him a ride to the nearest town. He makes custom wood snowboards for a living that pays just enough for him to snowboard all winter.
On our way back, we stopped by the Skagit River for a break and this is the result.
High above the Skagit Valley a balloonist was taking advantage of the breeze and nice weather.
We finished up the day with a stop at a fish diner. Was a nice day, topped off with a nice meal.
