Winter Lunch on Crystal Mountain

Crystal Mountain is a favorite ski resort here in Western Washington. The snow is always good and the lift lines are rarely long. We hadn't had much of a chance to get out there this winter because of other events and travels. But an unseasonably warm mid January day we decided to try out the new gondola to enjoy the view and lunch at the top.

Make the jump for more pics and story...

In 2010 Crystal Mountain built the Mt. Rainier Gondola which takes you from the base of Crystal Mountain Resort to the peak of the mountain, and back down again if you don't ski. It's a fun ride and costs $22 per person to ride. A bit spendy, but it is a fun ride with an unmatched view. And not nearly as cold as a chair lift.

Full house on a day like today. It was extremely warm for mid January. Close to 50 degrees at the summit. But given the clear sky, warm air, and still plenty of snow, people were out skiing in force. There was not a parking space to be had within a decent walking distance from the resort. Fortunately, the resort runs a shuttle service from the many parking lots further down the hill.

At the top is a restaurant. A warning though. The food at the restaurant is not the best quality and is very expensive. Think $25 for over cooked fish and chips, or more for dry steak. However, they do have some decent beers and good Washington Wines.

Because there are so many people here, the birds have become quite accustomed to being fed. Today there were a group of kids feeding the birds from their hand.

But regardless of the overpriced food, what you are really here for on a day like today is the view. Mt Rainier is literally across one valley from you. The mountain top you are standing on outside the restaurant drops away so fast you get vertigo. From here you can see Mt Adams, Mt. Hood, and Mt St Helens as well.
If you ever have the chance to get up here on a sunny day it is well worth the trip and the expense.

Chinook pass isn't open yet. Don't they understand? We own Jeeps! Guess we will have to save that trip for another day.
We do have quite a few more pictures from the day in our OneDrive Gallery. Please have a look!
